A Brief History of Warooka

  • Warooka was established in 1876
  • Warooka is the aboriginal word for 'muddy waterhole'
  • On 19th September 1902 at approx. 8.30pm, an earthquake hit Warooka. Measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale. The earthquake caused massive damage to Warooka and was recorded as the first known deaths from earthquakes in Australia. Damage to buildings can still be seen in Warooka.

Flaherty's Beach Sandbar Golf Classic

This unique event is held annually in January/February at Flaherty's Beach (5kms north of Warooka on the road to Minlaton) on the nearest Sunday to the dodge tide.

The first Classic was an innovation of the newly-formed Warooka Progress Association in 1997 and its longevity is testament to its popularity. The novelty of two 6-hole courses, laid out by local identity Gary Murdoch as the high-tide recedes, attracts expert and amateur golfers alike. The "Scooby Hole-in-One", named after local identity Ernie "Scooby" Koop who was a top golfer of the Warooka Golf Club, carries a prize of $1,000. This had evaded capture until last year when it was won by an under-15 golfer. This just goes to show that it is a true Family event and everybody is in with a chance.

Entry Fee is $10, also $1 for three shots at the $1,000 Hole-in-One. Prizes are awarded for Men, Women, Junior and Ambrose and, of course, the inevitable NAGA!

A Fun Day for all, BBQ lunch, soft-drinks and Bar open all day.

Next event, Sunday January 11th 2009 10.00am-5.00pm

Ryan Wheeler, who was the first to take out the $1,000 prize for the Hole-in-One in 2008.

Warooka Christmas Eve

Warooka Christmas Eve

This is a Must-See Event.
A huge Pageant wends its way through the local streets, depositing Father Christmas at the Village Green, before heading back to the Sports Ground.
A Street Party atmosphere is created by the residents watching the Pageant from their homes and their numbers are swelled by the influx from SYP Communities and ex-patriot Warookans returning for Christmas.
On the Village Green, Father Christmas meets and greets the children with a small gift while Emergency Services cook up a sausage or two (and sometimes doughnuts) and everybody gets together to catch up on old times.
Standing-room only at the Pub but the children play on the Village Green and people are still catching up with each other along the street as they finally make their way home.
All of this kicks off around 6pm and most local businesses make themselves available for those last-minute shopping needs. See you there and have a Happy Christmas!
